Links
The following list of hot links is preliminary. I will update it with sites of other artists that I like as well as other sorts of sites which I consider helpful or interesting. However, helpful sites are often dull and unimaginative, so at least they should be informative. The criteria for inclusion of artist's sites is that I personally like and relate to the art being presented.
-
Cross Town Arts
This site covers the arts in general in the Washington D.C. area.
-
Jack Dollhausen
This artist's site may not be for anyone looking for statuettes of ballerinas or watercolors of sunsets, but the work is very interesting to me and is composed of a lot of passive and active interactive pieces or great humor and content. The site is, however, very extensive and somewhat difficult to grasp at first. A lot of electronic and technical foofraw which I happen to like.

The Art Galleries of Washington DC
This site belongs to Anna Maria Gambino-Columbo. She has several pages covering galleries and artists and topics of interest to artists. She Lists the "ten best" galleries and artists in DC, a form of subjective ranking which is anathema to me. However, she provides the most comprehensive view of the DC art scene and is certainly not afraid to voice her opinions. Those whose work she likes are praised fulsomely, and a few of those whose work she dislikes are disparaged with great gusto (she clearly does not much care for the painting of Jacob Kainen and the late work of Sam Gilliam. Her opinions of their art is expressed in memorable, pithy and somewhat extreme terms).

Clayton Bailey
Bailey is an artist whose site I ran across in the links of Dallhausen. His work is richly humorous. I have yet to explore the entire site, but what I saw caused me to laugh out loud. The site is much like revisiting Mad Magazine on the web, and indeed some of his sculpture's origins lie in cartoon characters from that rag.

Art in Context
the Art in Context Center for Communications is a nonprofit organization, whose site is an extensive online reference source about artists (living and dead), galleries, and museums. These are cross referenced. The site also provides services for site design and maintenance.

Koan Artwow
A bunch of stuff about Washington D.C. artists, galleries, and museums. It includes reviews categorized as "Must See" or less. It also contains interviews with various DC people active in the arts and a bulletin board. The interviews were the most interesting part of the site for me. The artist's pages are divided between pages appearing under the buttons "Gallery" and "DC Web Guide". The latter also contains museums and other organizations.
